High Stepping

Muscles worked: Legs & Glutes, Glutes & Hips, Calves · Also: Shoulders, Back, Chest

High Stepping is a marching-style cardio move: you lift your knees high, one after another, at a brisk pace, driving your arms as you go.

Lift each knee toward hip height if you can, stay on the balls of your feet, and keep your torso tall rather than leaning back. If high knees jar your joints, lower the height and keep the rhythm — the pace matters more than the height.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall and lift one knee toward hip height, staying on the balls of your feet.
  2. Alternate knees at a brisk pace, driving your arms as you go.
  3. Keep your torso tall rather than leaning back.
  4. Lift each knee toward hip height if you can, but keep the rhythm steady.
  5. If high knees jar your joints, lower the height and keep the rhythm — the pace matters more than the height.
